P.S. When does spring start? If we have two teams I need to start running...

I , Like Ray , still feel that I can play on the 30+ team...I have been recruited heavliy to play on a 40+ team but enjoy playing on the 30+ team a lot better...Mostly because I just like playing with the guys on the team.
We are a pretty good team and I don't think we are less of a team because our players have got older, but as we get older things in our lives change so we can't commit to the team like we could in prior years. Also there are players in my opinion who make a big difference. I think we are a better team when Michael and Brian are both there, we are much better when Sean is in midfield, not because he is super talented but because people are less likely to camp in the middle of the field. We are better when Tony is here.We are better defensively when Ray is there. Also I would always want to play on a team with Wiggs, who shows up when he is a little banged up, and then doesn't play, but he comes because he thinks we might be short , or a guy like Dennis who will go in the goal when no one else will.
I think I can still play in the 30 + league but I will go with whatever the groups decides
Also I do know when we older we are more prone to injuries... so let me clarify when I am Healthy...I feel that I can still play at the 30+ level.

Ray posting in response to Bobby's note. I know I am capable of playing in the 30+. I agree with Bobby that when I am banged up physically, I may not be at my best and thus sometimes I choose to take the week off if we have plenty of people so that I can fully heal and I don't drag down the team. My biggest question is can I get into shape enough to play on both teams possibly, depending on game times, locations, and my body. I want to hang out with everyone after games still, and moving from one game to another will make that hard.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of considerations for all of us to make. I would appreciate everyone's thoughts on the issue so we can move forward as a team, although it may be a team in two leagues.

I feel kind of the opposite about forming two teams. If we do, we will lose many of our best players to the 40+ team. I also would miss the camaraderie of the 40+ as a long time Buffalo. I understand the dilemma but would rather keep one team.

I will paraphrase Mike O'connor's email for the sake of brevity: He ask I make some comments, I did so.
ReplyDeleteWe need to consider whether we will have enough to actually field two teams, since some Full Timers are still 80% attendance. (Sean: We need recruits to keep rosters at 18-20. Even if all 20 show, we are not at full sub capacity {10 guys-sub partners)
How accurate predicting weekly attendance was your ‘sign in’ program?(on average 1-2 would no show without calling, 1-2 would not respond to the check in but show up. It was was fairly reliable and I never was short of subs) If more people, including myself, were classified as subs and only could come when actual fulltime people were unavailable, that might eliminate the over-attendance problem that seemed to occur at many of the games (I don't think the over attendance is the main issue here. Most guys thought the sub system/partners handled the massive subs. We are not trying to grow to two teams because of full rosters. I can't expand on those reasons, pls refer back to my previous emails). I know everyone wants to play, but I don’t think there are enough for two teams (we have about 5+ potential recruits for the 30+. I agree though that there will be work to be done to shore up the rosters for a 30+ and 40+ spring team). If the few 40+’s, that are integral to the 30+ group stay at 30+, as they should, any 40+ squad would be hard pressed to compete. Forget about people playing both 30+ and 40+ the same day. Most of the 40+ people I know are already playing in the 40+ division.
Mike O'Connor (through the key strokes of Sean)
I will abide by the group’s decision.

ReplyDeletePut me on the 30+ team. On another note, to respond to your earlier blog about how the team can improve. First, thanks for your time and enthusiasm.
1) Acknowledge that the refs are poor and do not rely on them to make calls. Hoping that they will call an off sides trap is an example . I was burned on this in the last game as well as some others on our defense who tried to force off sides.
2) Work the ball to the outside. Many teams we play will only protect one side. Many times we play the ball too much down the center.
3) Good passes, short dribbling to get into a good position to pass or strike on the goal. A good player has about a 70-80% chance to get around each defender, but trying to dribble around several defenders will ultimately loose the ball.
4) Continue to have fun.

Good Morning Buffalos,
ReplyDeleteSince we don't have a consensus on how to proceed, my suggestion is to keep everything the same for spring. This should allow enough time for us to make a good decision on possible 30+/40+ split in the fall.
Brian Dubay
In regards to the 40 and over team; if you let guys choose themselves or if you have a “board” to choose; either way you will dilute the 40+ team. Futhermore, I believe our roster includes some 40+ that do not play much; if any at all. My personal opinion is that there are two-three 40+ that are fit for the 30 league and maybe a couple more that are borderline (myself included); and if you take those four-five players and keep them in the 30+ league; the 40+ team will be hurting !! I think if we do split into two teams; the easiest and fairest approach is to make it a clean break and all 40 + go to 40+ and all under 40 stay in the 30+.
ReplyDeleteMy response to this player:
I agree, I don't want to grow and have one "die off'.
If we had 2 guys representing the 40+ team picking their team, this would prevent dilution since the two 40+ representatives have their own best interest (and the 40+ team) in mind. If the 30+ representatives felt strong enough to fill a roster spot with a strong 40+, then so be it.
I suspect what would happen, especially considering the 'school yard technique' is that the strongest 40+ players would be drafted in the first or second round of picking by their 40+ captains; and the strongest 30+ players would be drafted likewise by their 30+. A player like tony will not be passed up by the 40+ captain, this I can assure you.
As I write this, I tend to agree with you even more though that spitting it based on age is the Easiest and the 'Blindest' way of doing it. I don't think everyone will be happy about it though.

Oh yeah, I fowarded the last posting from an anonymous player
ReplyDeleteI am good to play this spring and let nature takes its course. I was one of the people that would have tried to play on both teams, and when in shape feel that I would not hurt either team. Being severely out of shape at this point, it would be a tough spring to try two teams.
ReplyDeleteIf we go by age alone, I will be ok with that. All I want is to play, have fun, get exercise, keep moving, and stay competitive at heart. I would expect that this is all of our goals.
I hope to drink with all of you after the games in the near future. (just bring your own damn beer!!!!!!)
